Las Torrijas

Las Torrijas

  • 1 loaf of french or italian bread
  • 1 liter of milk
  • peel of one orange
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • 12 TB of sugar
  • 4 eggs (beaten)
  • 1 cup of safflower oil
  • 3/4 cup of sugar mixed with 1 tspn of cinnamon for syrup
  • plate of 3/4 cup of mixed with 1 tspn of cinnamon for rolling bread torrijas:

Primer Paso:  Add cinnamon stick, orange peel and sugar to milk and hear until boiling.  Let cool.

Segundo Paso:  Slice bread into thick slices and let soak in the cooled milk mixture

Tercer Paso:  Take bread out fo milk when soft and well soaked.

Cuarto Paso:  Dip bread slices in beaten egg mixture and then place in frying pan of hot oi.

**PLEASE NOTE: FRY BREAD WITH ADULT SUPERVISION!!!**

Quinto Paso:  Turn bread slices in pan until golden  brown on each side.  Take out of pan and set aside.  Let cool a little (until warm, but no longer very hot).

Sexto Paso:  Roll warm bread slices in sugar and cinnamon mixture and put on platter.

Séptimo Paso:  Heat 3/4 cup of sugar mixed with a little cinnamon and 1/2 cup of water.  Melt mixture and let boil for 5 minutes, until thick and syrup-like.  Pour on top of fried bread and let cool.

Serve at room temperature.

Torrijas are best eaten the next day!!!
