Frequently Asked Questions
How can I contact Mr. B?

What will I learn in science this year?
This year the main topics of study are physics and chemistry. Along with these will be a lot of what are called science process skills: how to observe, measure, analyze and as well as think about what happens in experiments and nature.
What will class be like on a daily basis?
Class varies in its format. Very often we will start with a question of the day (QOTD) and then go into a class discussion or lab work. For long stretches of the year we work on long term projects. Hands-on work is a big part of the class.
We will be "doing" science and your main job is to learn to figure things out for yourself.
How will I be graded in this class?
You will be graded in 4 areas: homework, quizzes, tests and projects. Homework assignments are worth from 3 to 5 points each, quizzes around 25 point each, tests about 50 point each and projects are about 100 points each. Your grade will be based on how many points you have earned out of the total possible number of points.
You will not receive a formal grade for class participation. Why not? Participation is a baseline requirement for success. In sports you don't get a score for practice but you have to do it to perform well in the game. If you don't go to practice you may not even be allowed to play in the game. However, your participation can tweak your grade up or down based on the quality and quantity of your participation in class. Participation will look different for everyone. For some it will consist of asking a lot of questions and making comments. For others it will consist of quietly but actively listening in class.
Learning is not a passive experience. You will have to DO STUFF.
