You can earn 3 points on your average by creating a durable piece of scientific apparatus (equipment) .  You will learn a lot by building it, your class will learn from you demonstrating it and future classes will benefit when I demonstrate it in class.  It's a win-win-win situation.

As a 3 point project, you need to have 3 parts in order to get all the points:
Project = 1
Poster = 1
Presentation in class = 1

Here are several sites you can use to get ideas, plans and supplies for creating your masterpiece.

The vast majority of these items fall into the physical science category but some also deal with biology or other natural science and technology.

MakeZine: Tons of stuff of varying quality.  Includes several computer-type projects. Make zine: http://makezine.com/blog/ ;  This one has a lot of high tech stuff but some that is very doable.  I like the tea candle steam engine.
