Tips on studying a foreign language

spain map #2: España

Suggestions for the Study of a Foreign Language

1. To be successful in the study of a foreign language, it is important that the student learn and constantly review the vocabulary from each chapter. The vocabulary learned in chapter one will be used in chapter two. The vocabulary learned in chapters one and two will be used in chapter three...and so on. Constant review of the vocabulary is most important and necessary in order to be successful in the study of a foreign language.

2. The use of "flash cards" is a great way to learn vocabulary.

3. Listen carefully in class to your teacher; and to cassette, video, and audio/computer programs. Practicing "listening" develops your listening skills and will be helpful when you take the "listening" section of an exam.

4. Be patient when reading literary selections. Do not stop to look up every unknown word. You will become bored and frustrated quickly. Rather, read through the passage and seek comprehension by looking at the entire paragraph. Only look up essential words.

5. Think in the language studied. When writing a composition, do not write it in English first and later translate it into the foreign language. Rough drafts should be done in the foreign language too.

6. Have a positive attitude toward the language you are studying. The rules of grammar may seem quite strange and different from English grammar. This doesn't make it wrong or English grammar better.

7. When preparing for exams, some students find it helpful to write out/summarize the material on notecards.

8. If the exam has several parts to be studied, study one part each night before the exam. Finally, review all parts the night before the exam.

9. Avoid using English in class. Use the foreign language you are studying whenever possible. Don't worry about making mistakes.
