Objective: To demonstrate understanding of the unique characteristics of the selected Spanish speaking country.

Task: You will present basic statistics and related information about your country which will be displayed in an album (scrapbook) depicting the life, traditions, and customs relative to the country you are researching. The project will be written in SPANISH. Year-long Project on Spanish-speaking country *one section due once a month (you must hand in your working bibliography each month with your research.)

*You need to keep a journal(binder or folder) on your country, finding photos, magazine and current newspaper articles, cultural topics, weather charts, etc. It will be checked periodically. *The grades for these research projects will count as test grades throughout the year. ------------------------------------------------------------------


This assignment has many parts. The monthly installments will be valued as test grades. The oral part of the report (the last evaluation) will also be valued as a test grade. The completed written project is also equivilant to a test. No late papers will be accepted!! NO EXEPCTIONS!

you will be graded on your accuracy/completion of the information as outlined below as well as your creativity and neatness in your presentation of the material you have researched. -----------------------------------------------------------------


START EARLY! Crashing computers, uncooperative printers and failing toner cartridges are NOT VALID EXCUSES for late papers. They are facts of modern academic life that you must learn to plan around.

Academic honesty: · Academic honesty is as important as truth in any other aspect of your life! Be sure you understand how to give proper credit to the sources of your information and how to cite quotations correctly to avoid accidental plagiarism. It should be understood that your term paper and homework assignments and tests and quizzes are your own work!

Your report must include the following information within your album:

ALL RESEARCH SUBMITTED MUST BE TYPED DOUBLE SPACED. Must Include a bibliography for each section.

1. Map with capital, major cities, rivers, mountains, and other geographical characteristics, with bordering countries, bodies of water indentified and labeled in SPANISH. This should be hand drawn (not computer generated) map. 8 1/2 x 11

2. Picture or illustration of monetary unit and its approximate worth in American dollars.

3.a.Various photos (magazines, computer) depicting your city/country, industry, agriculture, traditions, food, etc. with descriptions in SPANISH :don't paste pictures on paper put them in an envelope or folder.

3b. Make a creative colorful poster with these photos (and/or objects). Your poster must be on the thick poster board. It should be the 3 folded kind.

4. Flag (in color) 8" x11" the name of the country will be neatly printed in the lower right-hand corner.

5. Major religion of the country. The importance of religion in the daily life of the people.

6. Important fiestas celebrated in your country.(try to include at least 3.) Should include a brief description of the celebration.

7. National foods (include recipes: try to find them in Spanish if you can) dances, sports and pasttimes of the country

8. Major industrial/agricultural products of the country

9. Major Artists and their works (try to include at least 2); focus on one artist and include at least one example of his/her work.

10. Musical contributions made by individuals in the country (cite composers and the work)

11. Literacy rate in the country

12. Information on government: present day leader (about one paragraph)

13. A biography of a famous person from your country (about 1 page typed)

14. Research the animals found in your country. (about 1-2 paragraphs)

15. Choose one aspect of your research that most interested you and elaborate on that part of your research. Be creative in your research!

Sources of research: A minimum of four(4) sources must be used and cited, with only one of these an encyclopedia. If the internet is used, please include the URL. Some excellent sources: Travel magazines, National Geographic, Guide to Periodical Literature

Write to the embassy, tourist information office, or consulate of your country and request information. ---THIS MUST BE DONE IMMEDIATELY!!! Some countries have 1-800 phone numbers. Embassies of foreign countries

The 1st part of your report will be due Friday October 16. This part MUST INCLUDE the following (1) the flag ,(2) Map, (3)climate, geographical features of country and capital city,(4) monetary unit and (5)your country's early history(briefly explained-about 2 paragraphs) . No late papers will be accepted!! Please place everything in a folder with your name and your country on the cover.

The 2nd part will be due Friday, Nov. 13th. This part will include #3 a,(not the poster just yet--just the photos ---approximately 25 photos and descriptions--one line captions) from above.

The 3rd part will be due Wednesday, Jan. 13. This part will include # 5, 6, 7 from above. No late papers will be accepted.

The 4th part will be due Friday February 5. It should include # 3b (the poster),8,9,10. You should also add whatever photos and such you have accumulated. The poster you make will be displayed during international week here at Fieldston. No late papers will be accepted.

The 5th part will be due Thursday. March 4th. It should include the rest of the information: #11,12,13,14, 15. No late papers will be accepted. Friday, April 23th is when your completed album is due. Make sure you have made any necessary corrections throughout the year.

ojo: you will present the research to the class May 3-May 14th. You will have 20 minutes to present your information to the class in a creative manner. It is important to plan your presentation ahead, practicing and rehearsing. Be Creative! Play a game, teach the class "how to", etc. You may not read from your notes. You may have note cards with a few key words, however.

The FINAL COPY with final bibliography MUST BE TYPE WRITTEN DOUBLE SPACED. (Accent marks must be included!!) You are also to hand in your drafts inside your album.

All resources must be cited on the final page of your album, to include names of books used, authors, pages researched, URLs in complete forms.

The appearance of your report (weather it be in an album,scrapbook, etc., is entirely up to you.) USE YOUR IMAGINATION AND HAVE FUN !

*Plan your time wisely and don't take the mañana syndrome in approaching this project. Buena suerte.

Dont's for Oral Presentations there are a few minor English grammar mistakes, but all in all there are good tips here!
