As a school, Fieldston has always had a strong belief that hands-on (and I would add minds-on and hearts-on as well) education has intrinsic value.  The purpose of the middle school experiential education program is to get students out into the world in order to learn its lessons, face its challenges and reap its rewards in knowledge, community, and accomplishment.  Each of our trips are designed to cater to the developmental needs of the students in a particular grade and to provide appropriate challenges.

In 6th grade the theme of the trip is "Welcome to Fieldston Middle School."  The purpose of this trip is to introduce the students to each other and to their teachers.  This has traditionally been through a 2 day trip to a camp or outdoor center.  It focused on games and group challenges.

The 7th grade trip's theme is "From Me to We."  Seventh graders are literally and figuratively in the middle of of the middle school tradition.  They undergo many changes in their social, emotional and academic lives.  They also can be very focused on themselves.  The trip during the 7th grade year is a challenging 3 day outdoor trip that requires them to learn to work together in small groups to accomplish their goals.  The goals may be sailing across a stormy bay on the sailing trip, hiking to the summit of a mountain or reaching the top of a rock face.

The 8th grade trip's focus is "What is my place in the wider world and how can I be of service there?" This trip is designed to introduce students to different cultures and places within New York City.  It is part scavenger hunt, part service project, part cultural exploration.  The urban exploration is designed to build on the previous years and encourage students to work together, solve problems and open their minds and hearts to the diverse peoples of the Big Apple.  The course also has a reflection component to allow the students to synthesize the lessons learned on the course.
