8th grade trip
8th grade trip orientation: Thursday, February 25 at 6:30 pm in the Fieldston student commons
Trip description (in broad strokes)
The 8th grade trip is designed to focus on helping students to look at their place in the wider world by exploring, through service and personal encounters, New York City. The trip will be four days and three nights long and will be led by instructors from the New York City Outward Bound Center. The trip begins after lunch on Tuesday, May 11 and students will return to Fieldston in time for regular dismissal time on Friday, May 14. The grade will be split into 8 "crews" and will head out on an adventure that may take them throughout the five boroughs.
Although the trips will vary in their exact itineraries, all of the trips will have some commonalities. They will be part scavenger hunt, part service project and part cultural exploration. Each of the trips will contain the following elements although they may manifest in different ways for each crew:
- Group navigation through the city on foot and using public transportation
- A service project
- Cultural exploration through visits with community members in a variety of NYC neighborhoods focusing history, culture and religion
- Reflective writing
- Sleeping in safe, indoor sleep sites throughout the city. These may be in community centers or other sites vetted by Outward Bound. For all groups, Fieldston Middle School will be a sleep site for one of the three nights.
If students come away enjoying the experience, feeling challenged at times and getting to know New York, themselves and their classmates a little better, the trip will have been successful.
Forms and Paperwork: you will receive these at the orientation meeting or by mail if you cannot attend....but just in case...
