Bearing Witness

The degree of devastation is overwhelming. In both the Lower 9th Ward and more affluent communities, the destruction of property and lives is evident. Entire neighborhoods stand silent, with a few people slowly, but determined to build back their lives. Many on the trip made comments about how the areas are like ghost towns. Home after home, street after street, empty. Words are hard to come by to truly describe what we have witnessed in the most affected areas. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Perhaps, for now, these pictures can speak for those of us left speechless and searching to understand how this has happened in an American city. These are images, keep in mind, eight months after the storm.
