Welcome to Science Research
Congratulations on joining the course and welcome to our site.
We will post homework assignments, articles, and discussions here as we build the Fieldston Science Research course together.
It is my
opinion that the word Science signifies two different things. One, to
which we pay lip service in almost every science class, is the process
by which scientists have for centuries discovered facts and formed
theories about the natural world. The second, what most science classes
are about, is the body of knowledge that has been collected by scientists.
In this class we will pay lip service to the body of knowledge and instead focus on the methods and the tools we use to do science.
"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a
really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would
actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them
again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should,
because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it
happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that
happened in politics or religion. -Carl Sagan, astronomer and writer
(1934-1996)"
